American or European Roulette?

Which will pay me more?

When people think of Roulette, they tend to think of the wheel, the chips and the excitement. They rarely think about the two main types of Roulette and consider which one is better to play. Only real Roulette aficionados realize that there are two types of Roulette. The main difference between these types is only a single number, but it makes a big impact on the overall odds of the game, and therefore how often you may win.

American Roulette

This is the Roulette that is played in most North American casinos and in online casinos as well. It has a single and a double zero number in green on the layout and on the wheel. The overall house advantage in this game is 5.26%. This may not sound like a lot, but it is a huge advantage in gambling terms.

European Roulette

This game is almost exactly the same as American Roulette, except that there is no double zero. There is only a single zero, which takes the house advantage down from the 5.26% of American Roulette to only 2.63%. It's amazing that such a small difference can cut the house advantage in half, but it does. This is why it is advisable to play European Roulette whenever possible. Though it is not readily available everywhere, it is found in some offline casinos, and an increasing number of online casinos are now offering it as part of their portfolio of games.

There is another difference between the two games and that is the chips. In American Roulette, each player received different colored chips so that the dealer, and the players, can identify the player by the color of the chip on the table. In the European game all chips are the same color and memories are relied on rather than vision to separate players' bets.

European and English casinos have an option where the players can use the "en prison" rule. This allows the gambler, if the zero comes up, to either surrender one half of their outside wagers, meaning those wagers which are not on the numbers, or to leave them for the next game. When you add in the "en prison" factor, also known as "surrender", the house advantage drops even lower on the European wheel taking it to 1.352 percent. This is a very inviting play compared to the 5.26 percent in the United States.
